The Windows user profile is a record of personal, user-specific data associated with a named user’s identity and desktop environment. It contains many elements, such as settings, configuration items, connections and history. User profiles have gone from their original, fairly simple format to one which is increasingly complicated, and maintaining integrity and reliability within the user profile is often a matter of concern to Windows administrators, architects and consultants. Preserving the user’s “personality”—which is contained within their profile—is often key to maintaining a good standard of user experience.
